CALL FOR PAPERS:
The allegiance of the political with ontology and/or metaphysics indeed has a tumultuous history. Recently, the rise of post-structural and postmodern philosophies has served, in many respects, as a provocation to eradicate metaphysical thought from the discourse of the political. Moreover, in the wake of such philosophy the question may resound: how is a political philosophy still possible? Yet, it can be said that continental philosophy of the last four decades has neither abandoned a project of the political, nor has it relinquished metaphysics and ontology as constituents of this project. Today we seem to be witnessing a growing skepticism about the much lauded “end of metaphysics.” Thus, we must ask whether metaphysics really is at an end or whether it carries on in new an unexpected ways. Amidst the various pursuits of this general trajectory, whether Being is understood as becoming or reality is affirmed in the difference that constitutes it, a new ontology and/or metaphysics cannot be separated from the society we inhabit, the politics of control, and the political as the critical problematic of our age. Nevertheless, the issue of agency and subjectification remains an aporia in the very notion of political praxis. Therefore, this conference seeks to understand the new approaches and new possibilities for the political in light of recent manifestations of metaphysical and ontological thought. Correspondingly, we also ask whether such philosophy can offer productive theoretical alternatives toward the efficacy of political action and engagement.
In this regard, we welcome submissions on, but by no means limit them to, the following: Gilles Deleuze, Alain Badiou, Slavoj Žižek, Giorgio Agamben, Antonio Negri, Jacques Rancičre, Bruno Latour, Judith Butler, Seyla Benhabib, Bonnie Honig, and Elizabeth Grosz. While we encourage papers on the various intersections of the Political, ontology, and metaphysics, we also will accept submissions of more focused research on any of these thinkers and themes, as well as critiques of such philosophies. Finally, we also must include for consideration essays on the praxis and legitimation of political theorization within the aforementioned trajectory.
